What are Occupational Therapists and what do they do?
by D.O.C., OTD/C
Elevator speech! So I'm in an elevator and someone asks me:
Question: "What do you do? You're pretty big!" I love these questions because I love opportunities to promote occupational therapy (OT).
Answer: I reply that I am a personal trainer of 21 years but I am also a occupational therapy graduate. And I have been involved in the field of occupational therapy for over 7 years as an occupational therapist assistant (OTA).
Question: What is an occupational therapist? Is that like job training?
Answer: Nope! Think of an occupational therapist as a "functional physical therapist". An occupational therapist works with people who have disabilities (mental or physical) live independently.
Question: How do OT's you do that?
Answer: Well first we have to identify what the problem is. Then we assess you to see where the problems stem from. Once we identify that, then we create interventions. The types of patients we may see have injuries or disabilities that affect their respective occupations or live roles.
Question: Wow! Where do you guys work?
Answer: You'll see OT's work in hospitals, clinics, schools, etc. Anywhere that has patients that require the need of an OT via medical reference.
Question: What type of people do you work with?
Answer: Well, I am combining fitness with OT. I am using this method because health & wellness falls within our scope of practice. And fitness can be used to rehabilitate, prevent and maintain the health. It is also client centered. All hallmarks of an occupational therapist!
