How to Cope With Stress and Prevent Depression

Stress can interfere with all aspects of life and lead to clinical depression, which can affect occupations The premise of the Ony-X Fitness Therapy "Occupational Fitness" program is to implement goal directed fitness activities that helps to improve any occupational deficit or condition that interferes with occupational performance, including stress that leads to clinical depression. Stress can put you at risk for a variety of physical and mental health problems, including anxiety, depression, digestive issues, headaches, muscle tension and pain, heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, sleep issues, weight gain and memory and concentration issues.
What is Depression?
Depression (major depressive disorder) is a common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act.
When is stress a problem?
- Acute stress happens within a few minutes to a few hours of an event. It lasts for a short period of time, usually less than a few weeks, and is very intense. It can happen after an upsetting or unexpected event. For example, this could be a sudden bereavement, assault or natural disaster.
- Chronic stress lasts for a long period of time or keeps coming back. You might experience this if you are under lots of pressure a lot of the time. You might also feel chronic stress if your day-to-day life is difficult.
Is stress a mental health problem?
- Stress can cause mental health problems and a clinical diagnosis. And it can make existing problems worse. For example, if you experience lots of stress, this might lead you to develop a mental health problem like anxiety or depression. Or a traumatic period of stress might lead to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
- Mental health problems can cause stress. You might find coping with the day-to-day symptoms of your mental health problem is stressful. You may also feel stressed about managing medication, healthcare appointments or other treatments.
- You might use recreational drugs or alcohol to cope with stress. This could also affect your mental health, and cause further stress.
Stress is how we react when we feel under pressure or threatened. It usually happens when we are in a situation that we don't feel we can manage or control.
What can occupational therapy do to help?
Occupational therapy can help by implementing client centered activities and coping strategies designed to help manage stress. Individuals will experience many positive outcomes when participating in occupational therapy, including developing healthy relationships, improving focus, enhancing the ability to express feelings, and getting a better understanding of self-regulation.
