The link between an adequate amount of exercise and occupational health dates back to the days of Bernadino Ramazzini, the father of occupational medicine, and his classical observations on cobblers and tailors. Excessive work hours were of greater concern than the increase of fitness, physical activity or health promotion in the early phases of the industrial revolution. That situation is of even greater prevalence today. Consequently, a there has been a rise in health concerns such as diabetes, stroke, and heart disease within American society. The American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) has promoted work-based physical activities and health promotion programs as patient and client centered strategies to address this trend. There is evidence that an exercise program enables a healthier and more effective labor force.
Guided by the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework (OTPF), Onyx Occupational Fitness & Therapy, in 2023, will take the lead in developing a fitness and health promotional program in support of occupational health. Currently, unifocal fitness programs are being replaced by modular health programs that address a wide range of diseases such as the forementioned conditions, by implementing lifestyle changes including proper nutrition, exercise and manual therapy.
